What is a Line? (Leeds from Level 2)

As a starting point for this project my I have made several simple line drawings of photographs I have taken from the second floor window next to studio 4, these drawings are just a starting point looking at a journey within Leeds.

Communication is a Virus (Presentation)

I feel we clearly presented our entire concept to the group, but it was commented on that some of the pictures where not of great quality thus detracting from what the audience saw and how they appreciated the approach to the project.

Communication is a Virus (Reactions of 2nd Years)

I found it really interesting getting feed back from the second years who unknowingly took part in our little experiment, the fact they believed the situation was and achievement in its self, but the most interesting thing about it is many of the second years would think of much more outlandish reasons for certain aspects of the character eg. the beard than assume it was a disguise. Of course if we where ever to try anything quite as extravagant as this again we would spend much more that 20p on a beard and have a much greater emphasis on the design aspect of the character, his work and the power point, these are both aspects which came up within the crit, and through feedback from the second years.

Communication is a Virus (I'm Ollie)

This is a short video i made to show the group on Facebook the costume and voice for the first time it was also useful for me to look back and evaluate my own performance, and to adjust things accordingly. something else I found interesting at this point was to discover how long it would take to fully put on all the make up and prosthetic hair, a long time.

Communication is a Virus (The Changing Faces of Ollie Histon)

The definition of suffering for your art.

This is a series of pictures posted up on the Fantastic Four + 1 Facebook as a dialogue between myself and the group to explore the costume and character possibilities. Although this may look like I'm having a lot of fun It is really grueling research. this turned out to be a great forum for us to voice our opinions on the different stages of adorning my face in the beard, we were also able to use Photoshop to adjust the colour of my eyes before we purchased contacts.

Communication is a Virus (Script Outline)

Hello I’m Ollie…

And I’m here today to give you a brief talk about my work and my graphic design world…

I’m a little nervous so bare with me,

Right, a little about me, I’ve already said I’m Ollie, I went to Nottingham Trent university, I graduated 4 years ago and I have worked free lance ever since leaving.

When I first left university I did a few internships one for (insert GD firm) & (insert GD firm), I can only tell you that internships and placements are an amazing opportunity, even if its just making tea and coffee, just being in and around the environment of a design studio brilliant forum for you to express your ideas and absorb other peoples.

Once my internships finished, I unfortunately was not taken on and given a job.
But I made a few good friends at the companies and someone put my name forward as an up and coming designer to a German company Befreien Sie Entwurf, that roughly translates at free design, so in the summer of 2007 I packed my bags for 4months to the small German town of Fellbach about 25min drive from Stuttgart, where the studio was, and these are just a few pieces of work we did over there for a German music festival.

When I came back I suffered a bit of culture shock after living the German way of life for the past four months, I was approached by Nike UK to come with some posters for once of there campaigns.

So I went from working for a small firm in Germany in a studio with balding German men to working freelance for the UK arm of one of the biggest corporations in the world. This was a big eye opener to me showing how versatile a graphic designer needs to be. Especially if your working freelance because you have to adapt yourself from client to client and some clients are very stubborn and give you little room for manoeuvre.

But anyway this is the work I produced while at Nike. This experience was a great springboard for me opening a few doors and getting me a load more clients.

Communication is a Virus (OhDesign.com)

Using the ideas from the mock-ups as a group we used a website wix.com to make the website, trying to keep it as similar to the design as we could while using a pre-made but editable layout.
