Text Layout Development

The layout on previous posts where lacking, it was standard, alright, nice... and many other words that could be illustrated by a large man exhaling it an awfully disappointed fashion. Therefore I have attempted to put into practice some of the type 'stuff' we have learnt within Grahams workshop sessions. Hopefully through the experimentation above I have managed to improve the state of my Zine.

Initial Ideas - Posters

Along side my Zine I would like to produce some posters advertising the Zine and the event at the National Space Centre. I have created a series of posters hopefully in keeping with some of the other designs I have mad, but that are also interesting and engaging. The back ground is a steel sheet, but as has been remarked and the reason I chose the image in the first instance is it look a little like the surface of a rock celestial object, for example the moon. The foreground being iconic space based objects, hope fully these are obvious although they are silhouettes, if not I have written it in the top left hand corner.

'Good' Packaging

 

This is the final packaging I took into the crit. after experimenting with the different nets I used these particular designs. I think there is much that can be done regaurding the layout of the packaging, but as a praliminary exersise it was intresting to see how the logo I designed would work with different product/packaging.  The stock used was of fairly good quiality, the print on the other hand was not great, a simple lazer printer, but it gave a good indication of what the out come could look like.

What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

Because of the nature of my project i have developed my Photoshop skills this co in-sided well with the Photoshop induction and brief, but i think i furthered my skills through the amount of editing i have done throughout this project with vary degrees of success but on the hole the results where pleasing. 

What approaches to/methods of research have you developed and how have they informed your design development?
I did a lot of initial research on my dad in general, but when i had decided on my idea most of the research was to do with dates of to coincide with the hundred different facts I had chosen for my dads fictitious life. this research had a direct correlation on what pictures I used and how I used them. Another vital piece of research I did was the Book binding workshop because a book is a key aspect of my design. 

What strengths can you identify in your work and how/will you capitalise on them?     
I really enjoyed using Photoshop as an integral part of my project and feel it is a key strong area within the body of work, I haven't used Photoshop in as much detail  as i have through this project but i feel it went well an is a skill i will be able to develop and pursue further. 

What weakness can you identify in your work and how will you address these more fully?
I feel one of the weakest parts of my work is the accumulating and recording of the different necessary design stages and ultimately the blogging of this information, this is something i know is very important to the course and my development as a graphic designer and is something i will make a concerted effort to improve upon.

Identify Five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?    
1. Better time management. 
2. Use Blog more effectively.
3. Create more variations of work.
4. Experiment using different techniques.

An aspect of my crit was to further the branding, publicity, and create the book as more of a focal point within the project, this image could be used as advertising showing the universal good nature of the book. I unfortunately do not possess an older gentleman nor a small boy (grandson), but I wanted to have a visual representation of a grandfather and grandson, reading gleefully while sharing a bag of Werthers Originals, like the stereo type we all know and love.

During both crits there where comments made about the style of book, a concertina fold, due to a lack of time and resources I have not been able to create an actual prototype of the Paul Sutton book, thus I have turned to Photoshop to create a visual representation of what such a book would look like.

This is what I imagine a small child would look like if he where to have received this book, to enjoy and pass down for many generations.  In reality I do not have a small child therefore I have used a Google image and Photoshopped accordingly.
